District to launch new before- and after-school security measures

Bloomington Public Schools will introduce new security measures this fall to expand its current safeguards to before- and after-school hours. The elements are intended to reduce security risks and improve emergency preparedness beyond the normal school day hours.

The new measures will include an expansion of controlled access to the school, including:
  • Elementary school access will be controlled from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parents of students enrolled in Kids’ SAFARI will be assigned pre-programmed access cards that limit entry to a specific door for drop-off/pick-up only. Additional information on the distribution and use of the access cards will be shared with parents later this summer.
  • Middle school access will be controlled from 6:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Only students participating in the after-school Galaxy program will be allowed on campus after school. Security para-professionals will be assigned to control building access and other supervision responsibilities.
  • High school access will be controlled from 6:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. Students other than those participating in athletics, activities, clubs or after-school programs will not be allowed on campus before or after these times. The high schools have employed security para-professionals for several years. Scheduling of these staff positions will provide coverage within the school controlled access hours.
All before- and after-school staff will continue to participate in training and drills to more effectively safeguard students.
